Karen J. Dahood: Writing

"Writer" is a broad category. That's why I like the term "communications specialist" for what I do.

My credentials:

  • Undergraduate studies 1955-58, Macalester College, MN; completed major in Journalism [I learned I hated chasing fire engines (the moment) and loved standing under a starry sky watching Sputnik (the century).] and minor in Art
  • .

  • B.A. 1971, English and Creative Writing [poetry courses, along with a job writing 30-second TV promos, helped me to be both colorful and succinct], University of Arizona

  • Graduate studies 1975-77, courses in history of education at The University of Arizona, master's program in writing at Goddard College, VT. [My assigned mentors were Richard Rhodes, later a Pulitzer prize winner for The Making of the Atomic Bomb in 1986; and Geoffrey Wolfe, novelist and Esquire essayist.]

  • M.A., 1981, Education, St. Mary's College, Winona, MN, specializing in non-traditional teaching of local history. [I was employed as Creative Consultant and Project Writer for the Tucson Public Library Learning Library Program titled "Sonoran Heritage." I had to know how adults learn to develop programs and learning materials. Later I became an editor at the Arizona Historical Society and designed more programs for adults.]

  • Graduate studies 1997-98, University of Arizona courses in Gerontological Studies [For personal reasons and to help me write my Sophie George mysteries, I took courses on elderlaw, nursing home trends, women and aging, and death and dying.]

  • Graduate, Sonoran Institute Tucson Community Design Academy [This intense 12-week course preps 25 people each year to advocate for community development that is environmentally and socially sustainable, affordable, and beautiful.]
